The municipality of Rüthi is located at the foot of the Hoher Kasten mountain in the Rhine Valley between Altstätten and Buchs SG. In addition to Rüthi, the village of Büchel, the Hirschensprung, and the southern part of the hamlet of Rehag belong to the municipality, which also included Kobelwald from 1798 to 1831 and Lienz from 1803 to 1831.
To the east, the Rhine forms the municipal boundary, which is also the Swiss border to Austria. To the north, the municipality borders Oberriet, and to the south, Lienz, an exclave of the municipality of Altstätten.
The political municipality of Rüthi has existed as such since the founding of the canton in 1803. The municipal council is responsible for the administration of this area, which has more than 2400 inhabitants.
