Neerach - A village that connects history and nature!
The municipality of Neerach includes the village parts of Neerach and Riedt, which until the end of 1972 formed two independent civil communities, and together cover an area of 604 ha. Since January 1, 2022, the municipality of Neerach has been a unified municipality. The municipality is located in the Zurich Unterland on the edge of the Neeracherried, which has been under nature protection since 1956 and is now one of the most valuable Swiss locations for reed-dwelling bird species.
Of the 573 inhabitants in 1960, the majority still belonged to the farming class. Due to the subsequent construction activity, the population - now around 3,300 inhabitants - as well as the face of the municipality of Neerach have changed significantly due to larger new residential areas. However, the well-preserved town centers still maintain the rural character of the municipality.
Also in the educational and social area, significant changes have occurred in the once small farming community since the beginning of the last century. For example, in the first school building with the charming tower from 1817, the respective teacher often taught around 80 students in eight classes, while the Neerach population now has access to a center for educational, public, and cultural life that meets today's needs with the Sandbuck school facility, which was put into operation in 1984 and expanded in 2005 and 2023, as well as the adjacent multipurpose building.
