Neerach - A village that combines history and nature!
The municipality of Neerach includes the villages of Neerach and Riedt, which until the end of 1972 were still two independent civil municipalities, and together comprise an area of 604 ha. The municipality of Neerach has been a single municipality since 1 January 2022. The municipality is located in the Zurich Unterland on the edge of the Neeracherried, which has been under nature protection since 1956 and is now one of the most valuable Swiss sites for reed-dwelling bird species.
Of the 573 inhabitants in 1960, the majority still belonged to the farming community. Due to the subsequent building activity, the number of inhabitants - today around 3,300 inhabitants - and the face of the
municipality of Neerach have changed considerably due to larger new building areas. However, the well-preserved village centres still
maintain the rural character of the municipality today.
Significant changes have also occurred in the educational and social spheres in the once small farming community since the beginning of the
last century. For example, in the first schoolhouse with the
ornamental tower from 1817, the respective teacher often taught around 80 pupils in eight classes, the Neerach population has a school complex in Sandbuck, which was put into operation in 1984 and expanded in 2005 and 2023, and the adjacent multi-purpose building, a centre for school, public and cultural life that meets today's needs.
