Neuchâtel is a municipality in Switzerland, the capital of the canton of Neuchâtel and the district of Neuchâtel. It is located on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, on the southern slope of the Jura massif, and offers views of the Alps.
Neuchâtel is first mentioned in 1011. It is administered by the Counts of Neuchâtel until 1458, then it falls under the authority of the Orléans-Longueville family until 1707. The city is then under the authority of the Kings of Prussia until 1848, while since 1814 it joined Switzerland and forms the canton of Neuchâtel.
The city's economy was long linked to administration (main city of the region) and agriculture (winegrowing). It was dominated in the 18th century by international trade, then by the secondary (watchmaking) and tertiary sectors. At the beginning of the 19th and 20th centuries, several hotels were built to support tourism, which developed with the development of the railway. The region is heavily industrialized with the Suchard chocolate factory, the Martenet ironworks and sawmills, watchmaking and the manufacture of Indian fabrics, which developed in the 19th century and collapsed at the end of the 20th century. It is now renewing itself thanks to high technologies. The city is also known for its university, its football club, its high-tech activities and, in the tourism sector, for its medieval city centre and its location. It was also one of the four exhibiting cities of Expo.02.
