Maggia is a political municipality in the Vallemaggia district, in the canton of Ticino. The municipality is located in the lower and middle part of the Maggia Valley northwest of Locarno. The various districts are located on both sides of the Maggia. The municipality of Maggia was formed on April 4, 2004, by the merger of the previous municipalities of Aurigeno, Coglio, Giumaglio, Lodano, Maggia (former municipality), Moghegno, and Someo. At the end of 2004, the municipality had 2,358 inhabitants, of which 2,115 (= 89.7%) were Swiss citizens and 243 immigrants from other countries.
