Among other grape varieties, Pinot Noir prefers the sunny and rich limestone soil; and this ideal soil can be found in the basin of Salquenen / Salgesch, which was formed by a landslide of the Varone mountains. This landslide, which occurred between 5000 and 7000 years BC, has given the vineyard its incomparable soil, which is usually only found at altitudes of 1200 to 1800 meters.
