General information about Ergisch
Gateway to the Turtmann Valley: Ergisch and the pre-Alpine area of Obermatten have retained their original character and diverse traditions. Old Valais houses, stables, and barns are complemented by new buildings without interfering with the village image. The latter testify that young families are also resident. Primary school students attend classes in the neighboring municipality of Turtmann. Orientation students have been going to the school center in Gampel for many years.
The village still has its own village shop. This service is highly appreciated by the local population and holiday guests. The hospitality in the Obermatt restaurant, the only guest establishment in the village, is particularly noteworthy. The restaurant, completely renovated in 2014, is now a modern establishment in old garb and offers traditional cuisine.
Also noteworthy is the central location: In just under half an hour, you can reach the cantonal capital Sion, and it takes just as long to get to Brig. Locals and guests enjoy retreating to an intact nature and the unique view of the numerous mountain ranges as well as the Rhone Valley and the opposite mountain villages in all seasons. The vast hiking area Turtmann Valley-Augstbord region is very popular in summer. An absolute insider tip among the hikes is the Ergisch waterway.
The municipal area is mainly used for agriculture. The many part-time farmers who keep sheep, goats, Fleckvieh, or Eringer are true landscape caretakers.
