The Gemmipass
An ancient trade route and a postal road: The Gemmi was once the most frequented pass in the Alps! It connects the cantons of Bern and Valais. In the middle of the pass at 2061 m above sea level stands one of the oldest inns in the alpine Valais: The Berghotel Schwarenbach. Then as now, the mountain inn is in the right place; it is a stopover or starting point for mountain tours and numerous hikes.
From Kandersteg, you can comfortably take the Sunnbühlbahn up and hike in about an hour with only a height difference of just under 200m to the Berghotel Schwarenbach. From the Leukerbad side in Valais, you can reach the Berghotel via the Gemmibahn and the eponymous pass in about 1.5 hours with a pleasant descent of about 250m.
Thus, it is also considered a popular hiking destination for less athletic individuals and families, enjoying great popularity.
The location offers a haven of relaxation amidst the seclusion of the high Alps.
