Monthey is a Swiss municipality in the canton of Valais, located in Chablais, at the foot of the Dents du Midi. It includes the city that bears its name, the village of Choëx, Outrevièze, and the hamlet of Giettes, as well as enclaves in the municipality of Collombey-Muraz. Monthey is especially known for its carnival, one of the largest in French-speaking Switzerland. It also benefits from its proximity to the Portes du Soleil, in the Val d'Illiez. The Monthey region is also known for its erratic boulders. They were transported by the Rhône glacier from the Mont-Blanc massif over 15,000 years ago and are mostly made of granite. They are now part of the Federal Inventory of Landscapes, Sites, and Natural Monuments and are thus protected. Monthey also stands out thanks to its 40 drinking water fountains. They were created between 1800 and 1900, and a fountain keeper ensures that the residents of Monthey have fresh water day and night almost all year round. The water comes from the city's network and does not flow in a closed circuit.
