Glarus South
The canton of Glarus is an attractive residential, economic, and recreational area. It has around 42,000 inhabitants and is located halfway between the economic center of Zurich and the alpine recreational areas.
The canton has a high school and a special sports school (sportschule-glarnerland.ch) in Glarus. Diverse cultural offerings and a wide range of leisure activities - skiing in the famous ski areas of Braunwald (braunwald.ch) and Elm (elm.ch), the lesser-known but no less attractive recreational areas of Mollis and Filzbach (glarus-nord.ch), horseback riding, biking, hiking, mountain and ski tours, paragliding and gliding, and much more - guarantee a high quality of life throughout the canton. Additionally, Glarnerland remains largely free of fog and sunny during the dreary winter months in the Mittelland.
Braunwald (Municipality of Glarus South)
The residential and holiday region in the southern Glarnerland from Mitlödi to Urnerboden offers diverse and unique experiences, as not only nature and landscape are unique, but also the people who inhabit them. The car-free Braunwald is an ideal starting point for unforgettable discovery tours in the region.
The spa and tourist resort is located on a sun terrace at 1,256 m above sea level, west of Linthal and Rüti, and has around 320 inhabitants. The term Braunwald was first documented in writing in 1421. The name means a region rich in springs and forests.
In Braunwald, high above the hustle and bustle of everyday life and yet only a "stone's throw" away, families find the fulfillment of their dreams.
A special highlight is the discovery journey in the footsteps of the dwarf Bartli. But Braunwald, which is car-free, also offers many attractive summer and winter surprises for parents, athletes, and seniors. Those who arrive on a beautiful winter day in the deep snow-covered Braunwald know why this place is often referred to as a fairy tale world. Skiers, snowboarders, sledders, and mountain hikers can fully enjoy this dreamy mountain world under a bright blue sky. Braunwald is one of the snowiest regions in Switzerland.
