Already in the mid-1970s, Roman wall remains were discovered below the village of Riom. One of the buildings was of such impressive size, about 20 by 30 meters, that it probably served as an inn with stables for soldiers and traveling merchants. In the Churrätian Reichsguturbar from the year 840, Riom is also mentioned as a royal estate with its own church.
Today, the village presents itself with much charm and a lively basic supply: It has a restaurant, a cozy café, and a small grocery store. Further shopping opportunities and a comprehensive tourist infrastructure can be found in nearby Savognin, which is reachable in less than ten minutes by car.
An architectural landmark of Riom is the Sontga Crousch house, which stands on the northern edge of the village. It was built shortly after the devastating village fire in 1867 by Lurintg Maria Carisch, a wealthy returnee from Paris. Since 2011, the property has belonged to the Nova Fundaziun Origen Foundation.
In the future, the cultural heart of Origen is to beat in Riom: In addition to the medieval castle, the festival will also receive a year-round usable infrastructure in the theater rooms of the converted Clavadeira (former stable) – a significant step for the cultural development of the region.
