The municipality of Brissago is located on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, southwest of Ascona, on the border with Italy. Brissago is best known for the Brissago Islands, which are home to a botanical garden. Due to the mild climate, around 1500 different plant species can thrive here. These include palm trees, bamboo and eucalyptus, as well as kiwi and bananas. This gives the island by far the warmest climate in Switzerland. The garden was created from 1885 by Baroness Antoinette de Saint Léger and expanded from 1927 by the subsequent owner of the islands, the department store millionaire Max Emden. He sold them in 1949 to the Canton of Ticino, which opened the islands to the public as a botanical garden. Today, the owners of the islands are, in addition to the Canton of Ticino, the municipalities of Ascona, Brissago and Ronco sopra Ascona. The municipality of Brissago has approximately 2,000 inhabitants.
