The Val Müstair (Münstertal) is located in the easternmost part of Switzerland at the border with Italy and is famous for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the St. Johann Monastery. The region fascinates visitors with its untouched beauty: In spring, magnificent flower meadows alongside ancient larch and Swiss stone pine forests provide an idyllic sight. Summer and autumn lure with breathtaking tours on peaks, mountain passes, and high-altitude trails, while the valley in winter is enveloped in a quiet, deep snow-covered fairy-tale landscape. The Biosfera Val Müstair unites this diversity.
Since January 1, 2009, the six fractions of Fuldera, Lü, Tschierv, Valchava, Sta. Maria, and Müstair form the new municipality of Val Müstair. Covering an area of 198.65 km2, the attractive municipality offers a wide range of leisure activities and cultural events. About 1,500 inhabitants, known as Jauers, shape life in Val Müstair with their modest, open, and warm nature as well as their own language.
Nature in Val Müstair provides a sustainable habitat for humans and animals. The Rombach springs at the Ofenpass and meanders through the grasslands of the valley, surrounded by green forests and majestic mountain peaks that provide habitat for a variety of species. The intact natural landscape lies between the Swiss National Park and the Stilfserjoch.
The National Park:
The Swiss National Park, founded in 1914 and thus the oldest national park in the Alps, was designated the first Swiss biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1979. To meet the new requirements, the National Park sought cooperation with Val Müstair. This led to the establishment of the Biosfera Val Müstair Nature Park in 2010, which was designated as the UNESCO Biosfera Engiadina Val Müstair in collaboration with Engiadina Bassa in 2016.
