Lutzenberg is located in the Appenzeller Vorderland and is the northernmost municipality of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. With 2.29 km2, Lutzenberg is the smallest municipality in the canton by area.
Our municipality consists of the two districts of Lutzenberg with the hamlets of Brenden, Haufen, and Hof as well as the district of Wienacht-Tobel with the two corresponding hamlets. Unique is that the two districts are separated from each other by the municipalities of Thal, Heiden, and Wolfhalden. This circumstance dates back to 1771 when the municipality of Lutzenberg was assigned the current district of Wienacht-Tobel in a draw among the municipalities of Heiden, Wolfhalden, and Lutzenberg.
Both districts share the wonderful location at 430 to 790 meters above sea level with a magnificent view over Lake Constance.
