The mountain guide village St. Niklaus in the Matter Valley/Nikolaital is located at 1,120 m above sea level. The main town of the Matter Valley is at the foot of the Weisshorn and Mischabel group. Some hamlets have merged with the village center in recent decades. The village is well connected year-round by road and public transport (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn – MGB).

General information about St. Niklaus
Since the beginning of high alpine climbing in the region, St. Niklaus has been the center of climbing and mountain guiding. To give more attention to the significance of climbing in St. Niklaus, the home and mountain guide museum was established in the Meierturm, the oldest house in the Matter Valley. Known in St. Niklaus is the local quartzite, which was commercially mined until 2005.
St. Niklaus is part of the child-friendly tourist destination Grächen, which offers a snow-sure ski area with 44 kilometers of slopes in winter and enchanting Suonen hikes in summer. There is a considerable selection of experiences for young and old to discover in the region. A popular excursion destination for locals is the Alpe Jungen, accessible by cable car.
