For almost a millennium, the historical development of St. Margrethen was closely linked to the St. Gallen monastery, which only ended in 1805 when the monastery was dissolved by government decree. From these centuries date the still well-preserved castles, manor houses and farms, such as the Bergsteig castle, the Weinberg estate, the Bufflershof, the old Heldsberg manor house, the gabled building in Burghalde and the old schoolhouse in Wasen.
St. Margrethen was once a village that mainly lived from agriculture, forestry and viticulture. But gradually, industry and service industries increasingly displaced these sectors. Although the area used for forestry and agriculture still accounts for over 55%, in 1998, out of a total of 3599 employees, only 35 people were still employed in the agricultural and forestry sector, the other employees worked in industry and commerce and in the service sector.
In 1858, the St. Margrethen-Chur railway line was opened and, thanks to the railway connection to Bregenz in 1872, St. Margrethen station gained international importance. As a result, well-known industrial companies began to settle in the first half of this century, particularly in the field of paint manufacturing and wood and textile processing.
With the construction of the N1 motorway at the beginning of the 1960s, St. Margrethen was connected to the national and European road network and thus became an important location in international traffic, further enhanced by the border station, which has become a significant goods handling centre. This development has decisively shaped the village ever since. In addition to industry, a wide range of efficient businesses have emerged over time, especially in the construction industry. In the service sector, for example, warehouses and cold stores, bonded warehouses, silo facilities, transport companies and banks have settled, taking advantage of this favourable transport location. A diverse occupational structure can now cover almost all the needs of daily life. In addition, the large "Rheinpark" shopping centre on the eastern edge of the village offers residents of St. Margrethen and the surrounding area a wide range of shopping opportunities.
