For almost a millennium, the historical development of St. Margrethen was closely linked to the Abbey of St. Gallen, which only ceased in 1805 when the abbey was dissolved by government decree. From these centuries come the well-preserved castles, noble residences, and estates, such as the Bergsteig Castle, the Weinberg Estate, the Bufflershof, the old manor house Heldsberg, the block building in Burghalde, and the old schoolhouse in Wasen.
St. Margrethen was once a village that mainly lived from agriculture, forestry, and viticulture. However, gradually, industry and service companies increasingly displaced these sectors. Nevertheless, the forest and agricultural area still accounts for over 55%. In 1998, of a total of 3599 employees, only 35 were still employed in the agricultural and forestry sector, while the others worked in industry and trade as well as in the service sector.
In 1858, the St. Margrethen–Chur railway line was opened, and with the railway connection to Bregenz around 1872, the St. Margrethen station gained international significance. Subsequently, well-known industrial companies began to settle in the first half of this century, especially in the field of paint manufacturing as well as wood and textile processing.
With the construction of the N1 motorway in the early sixties, St. Margrethen gained access to the national and European road network, becoming an important location in international traffic, further enhanced by the border station, which has become a significant freight transshipment point. This development has since decisively shaped the village. Alongside industry, a diverse and efficient trade sector has developed over time, especially in the construction industry. In the service sector, for example, warehouses and cold storage facilities, duty-free warehouses, silo facilities, transport companies, and banks have settled, taking advantage of this favorable transport location. A diverse occupational structure can now cover almost all daily life needs. In addition, the large shopping center "Rheinpark" on the eastern edge of the village offers residents of St. Margrethen and the surrounding area rich shopping opportunities.

St. Margrethen has had a mineral spa for over 300 years, known far beyond the Lake Constance region for the healing properties of the water, which contains rare substances. Its current offerings of bathing and therapy options, saunas, and solariums attract wellness-seeking people from far and wide.
