Frenkendorf briefly introduced: Height 333 meters above sea level; the highest point is the Schauenburgerfluh at 663 meters. Area: 4.59 square kilometers. Population: 6528 (March 2017). Historical: Many know Frenkendorf from the battle at Hüftenschanz. On August 3, 1833, the local militia defeated the forces of the city of Basel here. Today, an obelisk made of red sandstone commemorates this bloody Saturday. The outcome of this battle led to the separation of the canton later that same month. Frenkendorf is first mentioned in documents in 1249. The earliest settlement finds can be dated back to 4000 BC in the Neolithic period. After the extinction of the Frohburg family, whose feudal lords were the Schauenburgs, Frenkendorf passed to the Bishop of Basel at the end of the 14th century, later to the city of Basel. The lords of Eptingen also owned parts of the village in the meantime.
