First mentioned in documents around 1300, the house is owned by a Cunradus de Lörrach dictus Lallo. Among the owners of the 16th century, the cloth merchant and court lord Hans Bär, who entered history as a Basel banner bearer through his heroic death in 1515 at Marignano, as well as the physician and city doctor Felix Platter (1536?1614) deserve special mention. The house name <> is derived from a two-figure sculpture that has survived as a fragment, depicting an athletic Samson in victorious battle with a Philistine. Felix Platter probably commissioned this from the well-known sculptor Hans Michel when he bought and expanded the courtyard. The three-story house Petersgraben 20 forms, together with the corner house No. 18 at the junction of Hebelstrasse, a complex that has been united under the name <> for several centuries. A few meters in front of the houses once ran the moat of the inner city fortifications.
