Until about 1870, the land between the city of Basel and the fishing village of Kleinhüningen was mainly used as pasture. Besides the port facilities, it was primarily the chemical industry that settled in this district, named after a former castle Klybeck. North of the industrial facilities, dense block-edge developments emerged, with some inner courtyards occupied by commercial buildings. From the 1960s onwards, some older buildings were replaced by new structures. A larger settlement at Wiesendamm, serving as a neighborhood center, was inaugurated in 1983. For the future development of the area between the Dreirosen and the Palmrain bridge located west of the border, there is a trinational planning group.
