Maggia is a political municipality in the district of Vallemaggia, in the canton of Ticino. The municipality is located in the lower and central part of the Valle Maggia, northwest of Locarno. The various districts are located on both sides of the Maggia. The municipality of Maggia was established on April 4, 2004, through the merger of the former municipalities of Aurigeno, Coglio, Giumaglio, Lodano, Maggia (former municipality), Moghegno, and Someo. At the end of 2004, the municipality had 2,358 inhabitants, of which 2,115 (= 89.7%) were Swiss citizens and 243 immigrants from other countries.
