General information about Ernen
Ernen received the Henry-Louis-Wakker Prize in 1979 for its particularly beautiful and well-preserved historical village image. The village image with its baroque wooden and stone houses is among the most impressive in Switzerland. Particularly noteworthy is the car-free village center with cobbled streets, lovingly restored houses, and a traditional atmosphere.
For over 30 years, Ernen has also been known as an international music village far beyond the country's borders. During the summer, high-profile concerts with world-renowned musicians from the classical scene take place as part of the "Musikwochen Ernen" – a true cultural highlight!
Ernen is located at 1,200 m above sea level and is the starting point for countless hikes and excursions – for example, to the wild romantic Binntal, which is part of the Binntal Nature Park. Opposite lies the famous Aletsch area with the AletschArena (Fiescheralp, Bettmeralp, Riederalp), which is a popular leisure and sports area both in winter and summer.
A daily ski bus connects Ernen with the valley station of the cable car in Fiesch, which provides access to the Aletsch Glacier. In addition, a stunning suspension bridge was opened a few years ago, connecting Ernen with the neighboring village of Bellwald – a highlight for hikers and cyclists (connection to the national Rhone route No. 1).
