The municipality of Brissago is located on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, southwest of Ascona at the border with Italy. Brissago is mainly known for the Brissago Islands, which have a botanical garden. Due to the mild climate, about 1500 different plant species can thrive. Among them are palms, bamboo, and eucalyptus, as well as kiwi and bananas. Thus, the island has by far the warmest climate in Switzerland. The garden was established in 1885 by Baroness Antoinette de Saint Léger and expanded from 1927 by the subsequent owner of the islands, department store millionaire Max Emden. He sold them in 1949 to the Canton of Ticino, which made the islands accessible to the public as a botanical garden. Today, the owners of the islands, in addition to the Canton of Ticino, are the municipalities of Ascona, Brissago, and Ronco sopra Ascona. The municipality of Brissago has about 2,000 inhabitants. The tax rate of 85% is very advantageous.
