MONUMENT PROTECTION
In 1713, there was a major fire disaster in Stans: 81 mostly wooden houses were destroyed. Therefore, the government of Stans established precise rules for the reconstruction of the village center: only stone houses were allowed to be built in the village core. To better protect the town hall and the church from fire, a larger square was left free. Thus, former homeowners were no longer allowed to build their houses there.
Even today, the village image of Stans is shaped by numerous historical buildings and sights, such as the Rosenburg (13th/14th century), the Winkelriedhaus (15th century), as well as the Capuchin monastery (1583) and the women's monastery (1618), where Heinrich Pestalozzi famously worked as a foster father after the French invasion of 1798.
The house number 4 built on the north side of the Stanser village square is the only remaining one from the phase of reconstruction after the devastating fire disaster of 1713. If these houses had been demolished, an important historical and typological unique witness would have been lost.
A prior archaeological survey has shown that there are building remains from the time before the village fire of 1713 on the site of village square 4/5. Therefore, there was a rescue excavation so that the findings could be documented before the new construction. Gradually, the remains of medieval Stans before the village fire became visible. Many finds have provided insight into the everyday life of that time (a destroyed tiled stove, clay pipes, ceramic shards, etc.).
