Neuchâtel is a municipality in Switzerland, the capital of the canton of Neuchâtel and the district of Neuchâtel. It is located on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, on the southern slope of the Jura massif, and overlooks the Alpine chain.
Neuchâtel is first mentioned in 1011. It was administered by the Counts of Neuchâtel until 1458, then it came under the authority of the Orléans-Longueville family until 1707. The city then came under the authority of the Kings of Prussia until 1848, but since 1814 it has joined Switzerland and formed the canton of Neuchâtel.
The city's economy was long linked to administration (largest city in the region) and agriculture (winegrowing). In the 18th century it was dominated by international trade, then by the secondary (watchmaking industry) and tertiary sectors. At the beginning of the 19th and 20th centuries, several hotels were built to support tourism, which developed with the development of the railway. The region is heavily industrialized with the Suchard chocolate factory, the Martenet ironworks and sawmills, the watchmaking industry and the manufacture of Indiennes, which developed in the 19th century and collapsed at the end of the 20th century. Today it is renewing itself thanks to high technology. The city is also known for its university, its football club, its activities in the high-tech sector and, in the tourism sector, for its medieval old town and its location. It was also one of the four host cities of Expo.02.
