Sclamischot? a quiet hamlet in the Lower Engadine
Sclamischot is a small fraction of the settlement of Strada in the Lower Engadine and politically belongs to the municipality of Valsot in the canton of Graubünden. The tranquil hamlet is located at about 1050 meters above sea level and extends along the right bank of the Inn between Strada and the border town of Martina. Its quiet, rural location and proximity to nature give the place a special charm.
The hamlet consists of only a few traditional Engadine houses, which, with their typical sgraffito decorations and massive stone walls, shape the historical village image. The small settlement picture is complemented by a modest commercial area that harmoniously blends into the surroundings. Access is via the well-developed main road 27, from which an asphalted bridge with a distinctive wooden roof and a hipped roof leads directly to Sclamischot. This bridge serves as a kind of gateway to a place that has preserved much of the original Engadine culture in its simplicity and seclusion.
A significant event in the history of the hamlet was the devastating fire of 1891, which destroyed three residential houses and as many stables. That this disaster occurred in the Swiss anniversary year turned out to be a fortunate coincidence in retrospect. The sympathy was great: numerous donations from home and abroad arrived to support the affected families. Even Swiss consulates abroad organized aid actions, and benefit concerts were held to provide the necessary funds for reconstruction. This example of lived solidarity remains a defining chapter in the history of Sclamischot.
