Volken is first mentioned in 1044 under the name <> (Alemannic settlement). Already in the Middle Ages, Volken was a highly fragmented property. Among the owners were the monasteries of Rheinau and St. Katharinental, Allerheiligen Schaffhausen, the collegiate chapters of Embrach and Heiligberg Winterthur, and the Lords of Eschlikon. Volken was part of the Flaach court district, which came to Zurich in 1694. In 1798, Volken formed a municipal community with Flaach. In 1803, it elected its first justice of the peace, and in 1805 the community received full independence.

Until 1604, the people of Volken went to church in Andelfingen. A hiking trail still commemorates this today, which bears the name <> and leads over the Egg to Andelfingen. Since 1610, Volken has been assigned to the closer parish of Flaach.

The village is characterized by the old schoolhouse built in 1892 with its bell tower. It received the tower with the clock during the conversion in 1932. For the bell tower, residents perform the functions of the bell ringer at weddings, funerals, etc. Today, the old schoolhouse houses two apartments, after the new school complex <> was built in 1982.
