Wealthy city dwellers not only owned properties in the old town, but also managed vineyards and land that spread out on the plains above the city. This is still evident today on the Stokarberg, where baroque country houses and stately villas built in the 19th century have been preserved. A exception were the country estates. In addition to the farm buildings necessary for operation and accommodation for the staff, they were also residences for the bourgeois and noble landowners. These enjoyed the summer freshness in the country or even lived here all year round.
The Stokar family, a long-established patrician family, owned a lot of land between Breite and Fäsenstaub and gave its name to the Stokarberg. The privilege of settling outside the old town was only granted to all citizens with the introduction of freedom of settlement in the course of the 19th century. Around the turn of the century, numerous villas were built on the Stokarberg for foresters, bankers, manufacturers, directors and doctors in various styles. This is how a place with impressive bourgeois residential culture was created.
