Historical Development - Bourgeois Building and Living Culture on Stokarberg
The wealthy townspeople not only owned properties in the old town, but also managed vineyards and lands that spread across the plains above the city. This is still traceable today on Stokarberg, where baroque country estates and stately villas have been preserved, which were added in the 19th century. An exception were the country estates. In addition to the operationally necessary economic buildings and accommodations for the staff, they were also residences for the bourgeois and noble landowners. They enjoyed summer freshness in the countryside or even lived here year-round.
The Stokar family, an old-established patrician family, owned much land between Breite and Fäsenstaub and was the namesake for Stokarberg. The privilege of settling outside the old town was only granted to all citizens with the introduction of freedom of settlement in the course of the 19th century. Numerous villas for forest masters, bankers, manufacturers, directors, and doctors were built in various styles around the turn of the century on Stokarberg. Thus, a place with impressive bourgeois living culture has emerged.
