Following is a brief summary of historical details about the location for all interested parties:
The Gestelnburg is an impressive rock castle in Switzerland that towers over the village of Niedergesteln in the canton of Valais. It was built in the 11th century by the influential family de la Tour, also known as the Lords of Turn. This family lost their dominion during conflicts with the Bishop of Sion in the late 14th century, which ultimately led to the castle's final destruction in 1384 by the Upper Wallisers.
The Gestelnburg, a national cultural asset of Switzerland, not only tells of historical power struggles but also of language development. In this region, French was once spoken, and the castle was named Châtillon, which means castle in German.
The castle stands about 100 meters above the village and is now accessible via a convenient path flanked by life-sized wooden sculptures of the barons de la Tour. The ruins include remnants of fortification walls, water cisterns, and outbuildings. The actual castle building extends over an impressive ridge and was once well defended with thick walls, moats, and a round tower, of which only remnants can be seen today.
The family de la Tour, which once ruled the Gestelnburg, was one of the most powerful feudal families in Valais in the late Middle Ages. However, the second half of the 14th century brought fierce conflicts between this family, the Bishop of Sion, and the Upper Wallisers, which ultimately led to the defeat of de la Tour.
Fascinatingly, the Gestelnburg was restored exactly 600 years after its destruction in 1984 by the Pro Castellione Foundation. During the excavations, parts of an impressive tiled stove were found, which are exhibited in the Sion Museum. These tiles with patterns, flowers, animals, and people date back to the peak of the family de la Tour in the 14th century. The restoration and the wooden sculptures vividly bring the castle and its history to life.
