The municipality of Brissago is located on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, southwest of Ascona, on the border with Italy. Brissago is known mainly for its islands and the botanical garden, where, thanks to the mild climate, about 1500 different species of plants thrive, including palms, bamboo, eucalyptus, kiwis, and bananas. The garden was created in 1885 by Baroness Antoinette de Saint Léger and, starting in 1927, was expanded by the subsequent owner of the islands, the wealthy businessman Max Emden. At the end of 2008, the municipality had almost 1900 inhabitants.
