General information about Gamsen
The Upper Valais was formerly inhabited by the Uberer, a Celtic tribe. The village of Gamsen has been almost continuously inhabited for around 3000 years. The Bürgergemeinde Gamsen was founded in 1290 and merged with Glis in 1690. In 1972, the municipality of Glis-Gamsen joined the municipality of Brig. Today, Gamsen is mainly considered an industrial area of Brig, with only the area along the Rhone being used for industrial purposes. The actual village is about 200 metres away. The kindergarten is located in Brigerbad. The children are picked up in the morning by the school bus and brought home after school. The primary school and the grammar school are located in Brig. Since the school year 2010/2011, pupils from grades 1 to 4 from Gamsen and Brigerbad have attended primary school in Glis.
