Saas-Balen
In terms of area, Saas Balen is a large municipality. Its territory extends on both sides of the Saaservispe far into the high mountains. Most of the municipal area therefore consists of unproductive land; nevertheless, Saas Balen has a rather rich settlement landscape. In addition to the main settlement itself, the municipality in the valley has three other primary settlements, namely Niedergut on the northern municipal border, Bidermatten and part of Tamatten on the southern municipal border. The secondary settlements spread out on both valley slopes and, according to the system of inner-alpine multi-stage farming, occupy the altitude levels suitable for the various types of farming (arable land, feeding, Maiensäss, alpine pastures). The settlements on the intermediate levels are mostly located on small cleared areas.
Development trends
Saas Balen itself was not as strongly influenced by the tourist development of the inner Saastal as Saas Grund, for example. Nevertheless, tourist businesses in Saas-Balen have been increasing in recent decades. Today there are about 500 guest beds. Relatively stable population figures have, moreover - together with a certain exodus from the old core - led to greater building activity in the main settlement.
